Collections Systems Manager – British Film Institute

MLitt 2007-08

Since graduating in 2008 I’ve held a number of roles in the museums and archives sectors, from Curator at Gairloch Heritage Museum, to working in Documentation and Collections Management at the V&A.  For the last four years I’ve been Collections Systems Manager at the British Film Institute, where I’m responsible for managing the collections management and digital preservation software systems for the National Film and TV Archive.

The aspect of the Museums & Gallery Studies course I valued most was how applied and hands-on it was.  We weren’t just being taught the theory of how museums operate, but gaining first-hand experience of how it works in practice – from placements in museums and group exhibition planning, to coursework on cataloguing and practical sessions labelling objects.
